Instagram Hashtags & Carousels: What’s Changed

Instagram has quietly shifted how its discovery system works and it’s not business as usual anymore for hashtags and carousel posts.

Here’s the breakdown of what’s changed, why it matters, and how you should update your strategy:

Instagram Hashtags Are Being Rebuilt for Relevance

Hashtags used to be one of the biggest ways to get discovered on Instagram, you’d add 20–30 to every post to maximise reach. No more. Instagram has now:

Removed the ability to follow hashtags - you can still add and search tags, but you can no longer follow them to get posts in your feed. This change finished rolling out in late 2024 and is now a core part of how the platform works in 2026.

Limited hashtags per post to a small number - Instagram now caps tags to about five per post max, pushing creators to use only the most relevant ones.

❗ This isn’t a glitch, it’s intentional: the platform wants to reduce spam and low-value tagging, and instead reward content that genuinely matches a user’s interests.

Hashtags Matter But in a Different Way

Instagram’s discovery is now powered more by:

➡️ AI-driven recommendations

➡️ Natural language and keyword signals in captions

➡️ Engagement patterns like saves, shares, comments

➡️ Behavioural matches between content and users’ interests

Hashtags still help with categorisation and search, but you’re no longer trying to game the system with a long list, you’re trying to be intentional with relevance.

Best practice now:

  • Use 3–5 targeted hashtags that clearly describe your content.

  • Avoid broad, generic tags like #love or #instagood if they don’t relate to your niche.

  • Pair hashtags with keywords in captions and alt text so the algorithm can understand your post’s topic.

Carousels Are Still Winning But Here’s the Update

Carousel posts are one of the top-performing formats for engagement, they keep people swiping and spending more time with your content. Instagram has even increased the maximum number of carousel slides (from 10 to up to 20), which gives brands more room to tell stories, share tips, or showcase products.

Here’s what this means for your content strategy:

More space = more impact: Plan your carousel like a mini story, slide 1 is your hook, slides 2 deliver value, and slide 3 invites action.

Higher engagement signals: Carousels encourage swipes, longer view time, and saves, all things the algorithm loves.

Carousel content now plays in search & Explore: Posts with clear context (keywords + relevant tags) are more likely to surface to new audiences.

The New Content Formula for 2026

Instagram today rewards quality, clarity and relevance.

✔️ Lead with a strong caption that answers a real question or offers insight

✔️ Use 3–5 specific hashtags that are niche and relevant

✔️ Build carousel posts that are story-driven or educational

✔️ Include keywords naturally in your captions (not just hashtags)

✔️ Encourage early engagement (comments/saves/shares)
