Why Your Next Customer Might Never Visit Google

For years, getting your business found online has meant one thing: Google.

We’ve all become familiar with the idea of searching for products, services and advice by typing a few words into a search bar and scrolling through the results. But that’s changing.

More and more people are asking tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and AI-powered search assistants to answer their questions instead. Rather than showing a long list of websites, these tools provide a direct answer, often pulling information from multiple trusted sources.

So, what does that mean if you're a small business?

It means that being visible online is no longer just about ranking on Google. It's about demonstrating your expertise wherever your potential customers are looking.

Helpful content has never been more valuable

One thing hasn't changed. Whether someone finds you through Google, AI search or social media, they're looking for businesses they can trust.

Every blog post, email newsletter, FAQ, case study or social media post helps paint a picture of who you are, what you know and how you can help. The businesses that consistently share useful, relevant content are giving search engines and AI platforms more reasons to recommend them.

It's not about producing more content

This is where many business owners feel overwhelmed. They think they need to post every day, write endless blogs and be active on every social media platform. In reality, that's rarely the answer. A smaller amount of thoughtful, useful content will almost always outperform lots of rushed, generic posts.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this answer a question my customers genuinely ask?

  • Does it show my knowledge and experience?

  • Would someone find this useful even if they didn't buy from me today?

If the answer is yes, you're on the right track.

AI is a brilliant assistant, but it shouldn't replace your voice

I use AI in my own business. It's fantastic for brainstorming ideas, overcoming writer's block and speeding up some of the behind-the-scenes work. But it doesn't know your customers like you do.

It hasn't had the conversations you've had. It doesn't understand your values, your personality or the stories that make your business unique. The best marketing happens when you combine smart technology with genuine human insight.

What should small businesses be doing now?

You don't need to completely change your marketing strategy.

Instead, focus on the things that have always built trust:

  • Keep your website up to date.

  • Share your expertise through blogs and helpful content.

  • Answer the questions your customers are already asking (a book I highly recommend reading is They Ask, You Answer by Marcus Sheridan)

  • Stay consistent, even if that means posting less often.

  • Let your personality shine through. People buy from people.

Technology will continue to evolve, but trust, credibility and expertise will always matter.

AI is changing how people search, but it isn't changing why they choose one business over another. People still want knowledgeable businesses they can trust. They still want reassurance that they're making the right decision. And they still connect with real people behind a brand. So don't worry about trying to outsmart the latest algorithm or chase every new trend. Focus on sharing your expertise, showing up consistently and creating content that genuinely helps your audience.

Whether someone finds you through Google, ChatGPT or somewhere else entirely, that's the kind of marketing that stands the test of time.
